AUTISM ASSESSMENTS
As a Registered Psychologist in Victoria, BC, and a pediatric neuropsychologist by training, Dr. Halliday offers comprehensive autism assessments for children, youth, and young adults. These evaluations focus on understanding social communication, behaviour patterns, sensory experiences, and developmental history in order to determine whether an individual meets criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
An autism assessment brings together information from interviews, standardized assessment tools, and direct observation to develop a clear and thoughtful understanding of how a child or young adult experiences the world. The goal is to provide families with diagnostic clarity and practical recommendations that can guide supports at home, school, and in the community.
What is an autism assessment?
An autism assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of a child’s social communication, behaviour, and developmental history. It is designed to determine whether a child meets criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder and to better understand their strengths, differences, and support needs.
These assessments are often recommended for:
Concerns about social communication or social understanding
Limited or repetitive behaviours, interests, or routines
Sensory sensitivities or differences in play and interaction
Questions about whether behaviours may be related to autism
Clarifying a diagnosis to guide supports and services
The results can be used to:
Confirm or rule out Autism Spectrum Disorder
Support access to services in British Columbia (e.g., Ministry of Children and Family Development funding)
Inform school-based supports and planning
Guide therapy, intervention, and family supports
The cost of an autism assessment is $2950.

Autism assessments involve:
Record Review and Consultation
Background records are collected and reviewed. Records may include things like report cards, treatment summaries (e.g., from Occupational Therapy or Speech-Language Pathology), physician consultation notes (e.g., from Pediatricians or Psychiatrists), and previous psychological assessments. Consultation with teachers or treatment providers may also be sought.
Intake Interview (60 minutes)
A meeting with primary caregivers to discuss current concerns and the goals for the assessment. During this interview, caregivers complete a standardized, semi-structured interview as part of the current standards for assessment autism (the Autism Diagnostic Interview, Revised).Semi-Structured Activities (60-90 minutes)
The child, youth or young adult completes series of semi-structured activities that provide opportunities to observe social interactions, communication, and other behaviours relevant to autism spectrum disorders (the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second edition). Standardized testing of intellectual functioning may also be completed in some cases.Feedback Session (60-minute appointment)
Meet to review the results and impressions, discuss any potential diagnoses, and review associated recommendations. Feedback sessions are typically held with the primary caregiver(s) initially for children up to 12 years of age. Youth 13 and older are often encouraged to also attend this appointment.Report and Recommendations
A detailed report is prepared that includes the results and impressions, as well as any relevant diagnoses. A list of recommendations associated with the original referral question(s) and results is also provided. If a diagnosis of autism is made, additional forms to initiate funding supports will be provided.Optional: Feedback with School
An additional feedback with the school team can be arranged. This is typically done virtually.
